Located at the convergence of the Trent
and Neuse
Rivers, New Bern is a small town that is rich in character and history. Being
North Carolina's second oldest town, New Bern played a key role in both the American
Revolution and the Civil War. It served briefly as the state capital in the late
18th century, and is home to Tryon
Palace, the beautifully restored 1770 home of British governor William Tryon.
Visitors to New Bern can spend lazy days sailing along the vast rivers that surround
the town, and explore the 157,000 acres (63,540 ha) of Croatan
National Forest. New Bern also offers four great Historic
Heritage Tours; African American Heritage, the Churches and Cemeteries, the
Civil War Heritage, and the Historic Homes tour. The town is full of activities
for kids, from The
Accidental Artist arts and crafts venue to A
Day at the Farm, a historic dairy farm where kids can milk cows and explore
pumpkin patches.
