Nestled between the Raleigh-Durham
area and the Outer Banks
coastal region, Eastern North Carolina offers an array of parks, recreational
activities and interesting attractions. At Cliffs
of the Neuse State Park, visitors enjoy camping, fishing, hiking and an
educational museum providing exhibits and displays about the geological history
of the park's cliffs. Southeast of Washington
lies Goose
Creek State Park, another popular recreation site offering hiking and canoeing
trails, a swimming beach and exceptional scenery on Pamlico River. Greenville
is the largest city in the area, boasting a massive convention center, an art
museum and May
Museum and Park, a historic site highlighting the history of Pitt County.
Washington's North
Carolina Estuarium, another impressive attraction, features living aquariums,
environmental artworks and historic artifacts from the region. A favorite tourist
site just west of Windsor
is Historic
Hope Plantation, where visitors have the chance to tour the Federal-era
home of former North Carolina governor David Stone.
